Arlo Guthrie live in Asbury Hall

Tickets: tickets.com

Dan Smalls Presents Arlo Guthrie live in Asbury Hall!

Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease.
The "Here Comes The Kid(s)" tour finds Arlo joined by his son, Abe Guthrie (keyboards and vocals), Krishna Guthrie (Abe's son on guitar and vocals), and old friend terry A La Berry (drums and vocals). The "Kid(s)" tour will continue to focus on the Woody Guthrie Centennial, but with the addition of Abe and Krishna, Arlo will be able to add more of his own material to the show.

Arlo Guthrie's career exploded in 1967 with the release of "Alice's Restaurant", whose title song premiered at the Newport Folk Festival helped foster a new commitment among the '60s generation to social consciousness and activism. Arlo went on to star in the 1969 Hollywood film version of "Alice's Restaurant", directed by Arthur Penn. With songs like "Alice's Restaurant", too long for radio airplay; "Coming into Los Angeles", banned from many radio stations (but a favorite at the 1969 Woodstock Festival); and the definitive rendition of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans", Guthrie was no One-Hit-Wonder. An artist of international stature, he has never had a 'hit' in the usual sense. He has usually preferred to walk to his own beat rather than march in step to the drum of popular culture. Over the last five decades Guthrie has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia winning a wide, popular following. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, playing the piano, six and twelve-string guitar, harmonica and a dozen other instruments, Arlo is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes figure prominently in his performances.

Joanna Barbera Album Release Show w/ Peter Burakowski in the Ninth Ward

Tickets: tickets.com

Phone: 888-223-6000

Dan Smalls Presents Joanna Barbera with Peter Burakowski live in the Ninth Ward to celebrate the release of her new album "Forget" releasing in August.

Joanna Barbera is an Austin, TX based singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. Her musical roots lie in the world of folk, but with her anticipated sophomore album, Forget, Barbera presents the perfect collision of solid rock and power prose. The album blends layers of sounds, over dense, textured instrumentals. Joanna’s fearless approach has catapulted her into a new direction—one she speaks of as an ongoing process of moving on and leaving the past behind. She describes the songs on the record as her way of finding a new sense of home and security.

Untamed by the orthodoxy of a label, Barbera truly is a self-made artist, baring her soul in pursuit of a dream that is quickly becoming reality. Her sultry vocals and intimate performances have led to shared stages with Sharon Van Etten, Mindy Smith, Melissa Ferrick, and Hamell on Trial, on stages across the country.

Peter Burakowski opens the show.

Vienna Teng in the Ninth Ward

Vienna Teng live in the Ninth Ward.

Reaching the national spotlight at the end of 2002, pianist Vienna Teng had been an important part of the California singer/songwriter scene for a few years before then. A pianist since the age of five, Teng took piano lessons before moving on to improvisation. Writing feverishly throughout her youth, she eventually had a full album's worth of instrumentals by the age of 16. Going to Stanford to further her education, she released an EP while going to school and recorded most of Waking Hour before she graduated. After releasing the record independently and taking it on the road with her, she scored an agreement with Virt Records and got national distribution. Comprised of many intimate songs that detailed the issues of a young adult, her music fell between the uptempo approach of Ben Folds and the theatrical chamber pop of Rufus Wainwright. She followed up with the matured and critically acclaimed effort Warm Strangers, which charted on three separate Billboard charts.

Touring with musicians like Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin over the years, Teng next hooked up with producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux) for her next album, Dreaming Through the Noise, followed by a tour with Duncan Sheik. After relocating from California to New York City, Teng's fourth full-length album, Inland Territory, which was released on Zoë/Rounder.

California Wives and My Gold Mask in the Ninth Ward

Tickets: tickets.com

Phone: 888-223-6000

Dan Smalls Presents California Wives and My Gold Mask on a double bill live in the Ninth Ward.

Babeville favorites, Chicago based indie rockers California Wives return to Babeville. Their debut album, Art History, was released just last fall on Vagrant Records and has scored them a number of song placements in tv shows like Underemployed, Real World and Jersey Shore. The new-wave quartet captured the attention of Pitchfork stating "Chicago new wave aesthetes California Wives caught our ears" and My Old Kentucky Blog firmly declaring "This could be the next buzz band everyone is talking about..."

My Gold Mask, a duo from Chicago (Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo on guitar), have been impressing critics since their 2009 debut. Inspiring Big Stereo to say that they “create songs that are a delicate balance between 90′s alternative rock gestures and futuristic gypsy tribe shit. But the real magic happens with the versatility of Gretta Rochelle’s vocals...”, Pitchfork marked them as “a band to watch," Pretty Much Amazing noted that the band "infuses some heart into the mundane, and makes it beautiful."
A deep wellspring of personal and musical experiences shaped their direction, leading them to their newest effort, Leave Me Midnight, just released in February.

Informed by cinema (particularly Italian Giallo) and galvanized by the dimly-lit warehouse district where their rehearsal space lies, the two thrive in a radiant wash of reverb with a metallic-like symphony mainly comprised of just a nylon string guitar and drums. Tinged with thunderous melodies, theirs is a sound of vision – a recondite vision to be sure, but such is the essence of My Gold Mask, and they deliver a powerful and engaging live show

Calexico with Depedro live in Asbury Hall

Tickets: tickets.com

Dan Smalls Presents Calexico with Depedrolive in Asbury Hall.

Joey Burns and John Convertino have long called upon an extended range of musical influences, blending them together so distinctly that the results have almost become a genre of their own. CALEXICO are associated with a style that their name – borrowed from a small town of less than 40,000 inhabitants on the border between the US and Mexico – has always defined with an unusual precision.

The feel of their new album ALGIERS, recorded in New Orleans, is recognizably classic CALEXICO, but their style has been revitalized and reborn by the experience of recording in the city. Its influence isn't necessarily sonically evident, but there’s a strange, powerful connection to the sounds that have always coloured their own, influences Burns has previously identified as including “Portugese fado, 50’s jazz, gypsy or romani music and its offshoots, 60’s surf and twang from Link Wray to country’s Duane Eddy, the spaghetti western epics of Ennio Morricone and dark indie rock singer songwriters.”
So, some 22 years since they first met, Joey Burns and John Convertino – joined as ever by a cast of musicians from across the globe – add yet another successful musical adventure to their list. You might think that, after six studio albums and a suitcase of tour CDs, collaborations with the likes of Victoria Williams, Iron & Wine, Willie Nelson, Roger McGuinn and Nancy Sinatra, and soundtrack work to boot, there wasn’t much more they could achieve. But you’d be wrong.

Eleanor Friedberger with TEEN in the Ninth Ward

Phone: 888-223-6000

Dan Smalls Presents Eleanor Friedberger with TEEN live in the Ninth Ward

Eleanor Friedberger is not just the enigmatic mouthpiece of one of music’s most interesting, dynamic and constantly exciting bands. In fact, Eleanor Friedberger is an exceptional songwriter herself, playing a variety of instruments and crafting the very sorts of choruses that made you fall in love with The Fiery Furnaces in the first place.

To coincide with the release date of her second solo album, Personal Record, Friedberger will be performing live at Babeville on June 4, 2013 in the Ninth Ward. Personal Record is the follow up to 2011’s Last Summer, which Pitchfork described as “a throwback to idiosyncratic but solidly crafted albums made in the 1970s by piano-driven popsmiths like Harry Nilsson, Todd Rundgren, and Joni Mitchell.”

Friedberger has an effortless ear for melody and arrangements, and doesn’t shy away from that oh-so-complicated genre “pop,” wrangling Phil Spector harmonies and 60′s girl group shimmers. A connoisseur of classic rock, she peppers her songs with dashes of Donovan, Carole King, Todd Rundgren and more. She truly is a masterful wordsmith, mashing up colorful, complicated lyrical lines into beautiful refrains, one of the only people capable of singing about riding her bike through Coney Island without, well, sounding like she’s singing about riding her bike through Coney Island. It’s a testament to her passionate vocal phrasing and manipulation of melody that she can combine things like earthquakes and heart shakes without sounding trite, contrived or like she’s bitten off more than she can chew.

Brooklyn's TEEN opens the show.

Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer perform "Child Ballads" with Mike & Ruthylive in the Ninth Ward.

Friends and collaborators, Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer are hitting the road together behind the forthcoming release of Anais’ new album, Child Ballads, which they recorded together. One of acoustic America’s most revered musical duos, Mike & Ruthy open the show.

“Child Ballads” aren’t kids’ songs – they’re a nineteenth century anthology named after their collector, Sir Francis James Child. The Child Ballads enjoyed a brief renaissance in the states in the early sixties when artists like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan performed and recorded them, and more recently with indie bands like the Decemberists and Fleet Foxes.

Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer spent several years collaborating on their arrangements and recordings of the traditional songs, creating an album with minimal production, two-guitar arrangements and the kind of close harmonies that call to mind Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris or an acoustic Fleetwood Mac.

For Mitchell “Child Ballads” comes on the heels of 2010′s Hadestown and 2012′s Young Man in America releases. Hamer began his career with the Colorado roots rock band Great American Taxi, but moved to New York in 2008 to pursue songwriting and a passion for Irish traditional music.

Catch them together live in the 9th Ward for a beautiful night of music.

Dan Smalls presents Dessa with Aby Wolf live in the Ninth Ward.

“Dessa has emerged as one of the most diverse and talented artists in indie rap.” –URB

“A one-woman powerhouse…with a literary sensibility and an aversion to genre clichés” –Utne Reader

Dessa’s first full-length record, A Badly Broken Code, introduced her to a national audience as a rapper, a singer, and a potent, imaginative lyricist. It earned a binder of superlative reviews from sources like NPR, The Seattle Times, and AM New York. To tour the album, she assembled a small cast of talented instrumentalists to re-interpret the disc for a dynamic live concert. Part rap show and part cabaret, the elegant presentation charmed both audiences and critics—not a negligible feat in hip hop, a genre with its share of purists.

Castor, The Twin captures these new arrangements for ten of Dessa’s strongest previously released songs. It also includes “The Beekeeper,” the haunting advance single from Dessa’s newest album. Vibraphone, piano, viola, and stand-up bass give the record a classical, sometimes orchestral sound for a beautiful and somber effect. The organic instrumentation pushes Dessa’s lyrics forward, showcasing the imagery and narratives that define her as a songwriter and an emcee.

Mike Dillon is one of the most dynamic and multifaceted percussionists in the country, best known for his unforgettable live performances, unorthodox percussion rig and distinct original sound. After emerging in late 1980’s as the first to lead a rock/funk band as a vocalist and vibraphone player, contributing to its evolution by his use of effects, Dillon has become well-known for producing genre-bending music that transcends categorization. Over the last 27 years, his creative song-writing and the repertoire of artists he has worked with - - on tour, stage or in the studio - - reveal his eclectic musical inspiration and skillful versatility. The Beast In Its Tracks, the new album from renowned singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, will be released March 5 on Pytheas Recordings. Of the record, Ritter says, “In the year after my marriage ended, I realized that I had more new songs than I’d ever had at one time. Far from the grand, sweeping feel of the songs on So Runs the World Away, these new songs felt like rocks in the shoe, hard little nuggets of whatever they were, be it spite, remorse, or happiness.”

The new album follows Ritter’s 2010 release, So Runs The World Away, of which Bob Boilen from NPR Music declared, “I’ve come to expect good records from him...but this one took my breath away,” while the Boston Globe praised, “quite sensational…marks the finest music he has made.”

In 2011, Ritter made is debut as a published author with his New York Times Best-selling novel, "Bright’s Passage" (Dial Press/Random House). Of the work, Stephen King writes in The New York Times Book Review, “Shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime . . . This is the work of a gifted novelist.”

Old Man Luedecke has a penchant for language. Based in Chester, Nova Scotia, the award-winning roots singer-songwriter’s latest album, Tender Is The Night, gives nod to F.R. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, a title lifted from John Keats poem, ‘Ode To A Nightingale.’

With skillful precision and a storyteller’s heart, Luedecke’s narrative-driven folk songs are playful, coy, and soul warming. Rich in metaphor, heart and instrumentation, Tender Is The Night muses on love, art and purpose.

Whitehorse live in the Ninth Ward

The classic tale of musical romance continues for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the husband and wife duo behind Whitehorse. One year after their debut, Whitehorse returns in ambitious fashion with The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss on SixShooter Records.

The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss is everything the talented pair’s first full length promised. As a whole, the album reveals the range of creative possibility that only expands as Whitehorse develops and focuses their sound. Song by song, the record takes surprising turns; while each track confidently bears Whitehorse’s signature blistering guitar work and love-knotted vocals, their willingness to take risks and ability to pull them off makes for captivating listening.

Whitehorse’s live show is built on mesmerizing guitar work and smoldering vocal chemistry, but also brings much more to the stage with complex layers of percussion, keyboard and telephone receiver amplification, tangled like an embrace with the help of looping pedals. Their sold out Winter Garden Theatre show in February, 2012 signaled their unquestionable arrival as a band.

There are the stories of the crisscrossed world and the things she has both gained and lost in her wake. There is the fervent fan-base that has grown with Ferrick, which has waited patiently for her latest opus for the preceding three years. Above all there is the sound, a voice burnished by breakdowns and breakthroughs, refined over the twenty years she has been doing this.

Brown Bird w/ Joe Fletcher, Hokan & Friends of the Sun live in the Ninth Ward

Brown Bird with Joe Fletcher, Hokan & Friends of the Sun live in the Ninth Ward.

Hailing from Providence, RI, Brown Bird is comprised of David Lamb and MorganEve Swain. The folk duo has performed for the past two years at the Newport Folk Festival, moving from the smaller stage last year to headline the main Fort stage this year. The festival appearances helped serve as a catalyst for the veteran folk musicians. The band’s forthcoming album Salt For Salt signals the fully-formed arrival of Brown Bird as a band you’ll be hearing a great deal from in the future.

While Lamb and Swain have always played off each other like pros, Salt For Salt is the first attempt at earnestly capturing the raw emotionally rich energy, honest musical missive and musicianship that Brown Bird has always project at their live shows. This is the folk album for people who love folk music and want it to remain devoid of anything commercial, a blistering testimonial recorded live to tape with influences ranging from classicist folk to gypsy and alternative influences.

Salt For Salt has been met with widespread critical acclaim including many hailing it as the best folk album of last year. The rising folk duo has toured relentlessly opening national tours for Trampled By Turtles, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Low Anthem and The Devil Makes Three, not to mention a much buzzed about performance at Mohawk earlier this year. So be sure catch Brown Bird live at Babeville so when they (inevitably) blowup, you can say, “I saw them way back when…”

Freakwater live in the Ninth Ward.

Freakwater was formed by Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin in 1989 and has been innovating and reinvigorating alt-country ever since. In January 2013 they will embark on their first tour in four years. The duo signed to Thrill Jockey in 1993 for the seminal Feels Like the Third Time, reissued on vinyl for Record Store Day 2012. 1995’s Old Paint showed the group’s songwriting coming into its own, and was their most critically acclaimed album to date. 1998’s Springtime saw the addition of Wilco’s Max Konrad Johnston to the group, and features some of the band’s most heartbreaking and beautiful songs, including the now classic “Louisville Lip.” The group expanded their sound on End Time, adding drum kit, organ, and even strings on several songs.

The early aughts saw Bean and Irwin each releasing solo albums, Dragging Wonder Lake and Cut Yourself a Switch, respectively. Both records showed each musician exploring different facets of the sound cultivated in Freakwater: Irwin a stripped down, appalacian vision of folk music, and Bean an artfully crafted, cosmopolitan type of pop. After a long silence, Irwin finally released her second solo release, Little Heater in September of 2012.

In a rare interview in 2002, Mangum told Pitchfork that "a lot of the basic assumptions I held about reality started crumbling" after the release of the much-revered 1998 classic In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. "I had this idea that if we all created our dream we could live happily ever after," he said. But when his dreams came true and his friends were still unhappy, he apparently "realized that I can't just sing my way out of all this suffering."

“So Mangum decided to drop out of the music scene entirely. As the years went by, his withdrawal became legendary: Slate described him as indie rock's Salinger, while Pitchfork called him its "most reclusive man." Fans resigned themselves to a future of listening to Neutral Milk Hotel only in recorded form, or in the form of overly emotional covers by their musician friends. His music became instantly nostalgic.”

“Then, a few years ago, Mangum began slowly creeping out of his self-imposed exile. In October 2008, he played a surprise show in Brooklyn. Over the next couple of years, he played a few benefit concerts and a couple more surprise sets. Last January, Mangum announced a fall tour, and the floodgates opened: Since then, he's appeared on the show Parks and Recreation, played at Occupy Wall Street, released a box set, and added dozens of tour dates—including a set at any recluse's worst nightmare, the ulta-hypefest of Coachella.” No one's quite sure why Mangum decided to come out of hiding; but his adoring fans in WNY will have a rare opportunity to connect with the singer in a live setting for what promises to be a night to remember at Babeville on January 9.
